Summary
Elizabeth Madison just graduated from college but she has no idea what she wants to do with her life. Before she can decide, her life gets flipped upside down when she learns that magic and magical creatures are real. Not only are they real, but she has a massive part to play in a war between good and evil due to her important ancestry.
My Review
I liked this book a lot. It was an exciting adventure almost from the start. From the first few chapters onward, this book had me hooked.
One of my favorite parts was the world building. I’m learning that I’m a sucker for a good world in a story, and this one is very interesting. Everything was intentionally left a little vague until close to the end of the book, and the pacing of how things were revealed felt natural.
The characters were great. The main villain’s second in command was easy to loathe, and the heroine was fun to follow. I really enjoyed seeing her care for her new friends and learn to use her newfound abilities. I will say that some of the jumps in her power level felt a little quick, but they didn’t take me out of the story.
The biggest thing keeping me from giving this book a full five stars was the romance. Early in the book, it seemed like every male character around Elizabeth’s age was an option to be a love interest (with the exception of a couple of gay men). All of these men seemed to flirt with her, which is fine, but what I didn’t like was how Elizabeth returned the flirting willingly. It made her seem a little bit desperate for love. We learn early on that she’s the chosen one, but I don’t think that should mean every eligible bachelor should be automatically interested romantically in her.
I will warn you, this book ends in a little bit of a cliffhanger. I finished the book wanting more immediately. Unfortunately, the author told me that the next book won’t come out until at least November. Here’s to hoping I can wait that long.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I can’t wait for the next installment. I give this book 4/5 stars.
