Wow! I can’t believe it’s already July! This year has been flying by.
Last month I started this blog in an effort to document what I read in greater detail, as well as to encourage myself to read more. Since it’s a new month, I thought I’d do a recap of all the books I read in June 2024.
Most of the books were great this month. One book in particular was not for me, but I ended up finishing it anyway. Also, there were a couple of DNFs this month, which I’ve listed at the bottom.
Minimum Wage Magic by Rachel Aaron
Technically, I started this one in May 2024, but I finished it in June. The first book in the DFZ series, this is a blend of science fiction and fantasy with amazing world building. The plot follows a young woman trying to earn money to pay off a debt, but she ends up roped into a mysterious plot that challenges her morals. I adored this book and ended up reading the whole series. Read my full review here.
Renegades by Marissa Meyer
In a post superhero world, this book follows the niece of the defeated greatest villain infiltrating the superheroes to take them down from the inside. Meanwhile, the son of some of the most famous heroes tries to find his mother’s killer. This book was okay, but I felt it leaned too heavily on tired superhero tropes, and I didn’t find the characters interesting enough to read the next book in the series.
A Wilderness of Stars by Shea Ernshaw
This one is a slow paced tale of a girl on a mission to save the world from disease and ruin. I wasn’t as big of a fan of this one. I struggled with just about every aspect of this book. It just wasn’t for me.
Part-Time Gods by Rachel Aaron
This is the second book in the DFZ series. After the mystery she discovered was mostly resolved, the main character is determined to solve a new problem she discovered at the end of book one. We as the readers get to see more of the crazy world the author created and go on a wild ride for a second time. Read my full review here.
Night Shift Dragons by Rachel Aaron
The finale to the DFZ series, this book picks up in the aftermath of the previous book’s climax. Now, the protagonist is forced to fix the problems that arose when she tried to solve her original dilemma. This book had a lot of emotional payoff that had been building throughout the story thus far. It was a joy to finish this series, despite having to say goodbye to these characters. DNF Pile
- Dreadful by Caitlyn Rozakis
- City of Mages by AJ Cerna and Kiersten Michele
Overall, this was a fun month of reading. I can’t wait to start on my list for July!
Happy Reading
